जब भी सोने के गहने की बात होती है तो सब पहले यही सोचते हैं कि यह शुद्ध सोने का है या नही। पर हमे कैसे पता चलेगा की यह सोने का ही है किसी और मटैरियल का नही।वैस भारत में शादी के समय सोने के गहनों की खरीददारी बढ़ जाती है पर शुद्ध सोने को खरीदना महंगा होता है।
शुद्ध सोने को 24 कैरेट कहा जाता है। और यह काफी नर्म होता है। आभूषण बनाने के लिए यह इसीलिए उपयुक्त नही होता है। इसे कठोर बनाने के लिए इसमे चांदी या तांबा मिलाया जाता है। भारत में अधिकतर आभूषण बनाने के लिए 22 कैरेट सोने का उपयोग किया जाता है। इसका मतलब यह है कि 22 भाग शुद्ध सोने में 2 भाग तांबा या चांदी का मिला होना ।
आम तौर पर लोग 22 कैरेट के सोने के गहने बनवाते हैं। अगर ये 18 कैरेट के सोने के गहने खरीदें तो उन्हें सस्ते मिल जायेंगे ।

24 कैरेट सोना
इसमें प्योर सोना ही होता है और काई मटैरियल नही मिला होता है। इसमे लगभग 100 प्रतिशत सोना ही होता है। चूंकि सोना एक धातु है और यह बहुत ही लचीला होता है। इसे पीटकर बहुत ही पतला तार बनाया जा सकता है। क्योंकि इसमे मिश्रण नही होता है तो यह पहनने लायक नही होता क्योंकि यह जल्दी मुड़ जाता है। कठोर नही हो पाता है। इसे कठोर बनाने के लिए ही इसमे मिश्रण किया जाता है।22 कैरेट सोना
इसका मतलब होता है कि इसमे 22 भाग सोना होगा और 2 भाग चांदी या तांबा या और कोई भी मटैरियल हो सकता है। क्योंकि इसमे कुछ भाग ही मिलाया जाता है तो यह 24 कैरेट से मजबूत भी होता है और पहनने में अच्छा भी। पर इसमे सोने का ज्यादा भाग है तो यह महंगा भी होता है।18 कैरेट सोना
इसमे 18 भाग शुद्ध सोना तथा 6 भाग अन्य पदार्थ जैसे - चांदी, तांबा या अन्य कोई भी पदार्थ मिलाया जाता है। इस हिसाब से इसमे 75 प्रतिशत सोना होता है और 25 प्रतिशत अन्य मटैरियल, इससे इस प्रकार के गहने बहुत मजबूत और टिकाउ होते हैं।24 कैरेट सोने की कीमत इस समय लगभग 47000 रूपया है। जबकि 22 कैरेट सोने की कीमत 24 कैरेट से 2000 से 3000 तक कम होता है। 18 कैरेट का इनसे ज्यादा कम होता है।
